An Introduction and Exhortation to the Book of Exodus

When you open your Bible to the second book of the Pentateuch (the name given to the first five books attributed to Moses as the human author), you might ask, “Why should I be interested in events that occurred 3500 years ago?” (The date of the Exodus is generally set around 1500 B.C.)

Some 2,000 years ago, the apostle Paul addressed that question in his first letter to believers in Corinth when he wrote: “Brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea...these things were our examples [pattern; i.e., something to be avoided], to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted” (1 Corinthians 10:1, 6).

You may not initially grasp the significance of Israel’s trials in Egypt or her troubles during her sojourn in the wilderness. Still, the experiences of the Twelve Tribes of Israel provide believers with an excellent study of the importance of faith and trusting God. We understand that Israel’s failures as a nation and people invited God’s judgment and served as a warning for all people who will follow the Lord.

In reading and studying the book of Exodus, let us consider that it serves as more than a history book. It also allows us to consider God’s character in His dealings with Israel and reminds us that He is loving, longsuffering, holy, just, gracious, and faithful. . . and He deals with us the same.

Let the journey begin!
